Doll Maker's Return, Part 1: Into the Firestorm

Doll Maker's Return, Part 1: Into the Firestorm

After realizing that the real-life world has generally taken a turn for the worse despite the promises of some of its leaders, I felt that now would be a good time to revisit my collection of X-Girl artworks. There is, however, one crucial difference: they will be placed in a completely different timeline that overwrites the previous one, and although I can still use the existing character designs, I will have to give them different names and backstories (or at least reassign them). Thus, the original CRASH/STAR timeline will henceforth no longer be canonical.

The new backstory is as follows: STORM (an acronym for Special Tactical Operations Response Mercenaries), a covert elite mercenary unit, was established in the aftermath of the Second World War in an attempt to prevent an armed conflict of that scale (or, worse yet, an even more destructive one) from ever happening again. For decades, they have succeeded in doing exactly that, but in that time they have since come to the conclusion that their forces cannot be everywhere in the world all at once, forcing them to decide who and what deserves their aid the most. Nevertheless, they maintain an idealistic outlook for the world as a whole. After the end of the Cold War, their operations were largely scaled back, but they continued operating in the shadows, unknown to much of the world.

Years later, after a long period of relative dormancy, STORM was forced to re-arm, this time to face a new threat: FIRE (an acronym for Free Independent Radical Extremists), another shadowy (but far more evil) organization, has been wreaking havoc across the globe, and even the best efforts of various nations have struggled to contain them. This time, the situation is so dire that, for the first time ever, STORM has received backing from many of the world's governments, in contrast to FIRE, which acts independently from governments (and often against them). To raise the stakes further, FIRE hired several disaffected ex-STORM personnel to bolster their capabilities, thus making them even more of a threat than before. To reinforce the contrast between FIRE and STORM, the former has a mostly cynical stance, unlike the latter's more idealistic approach; however, after several further years of operations, FIRE was defeated once and for all, leading to STORM losing its purpose and ultimately being disbanded soon after, with its personnel, materiel and technology transferred to a newly established independent organization called HOPE (Humanitarian Organization for Peacekeeping Enforcement), just in time to counter the actions of FEAR (Federation of Eurasian Authoritarian Regimes). Realizing that the future of the world is at stake once again, HOPE mobilizes once again to combat this new menace. This is the setting of Into the Firestorm: Reignited.

The original CRASH/STAR timeline cannot coexist with the new one, and this is why: although STORM and HOPE's top scientists conducted research into genetic enhancements for their agents, all of their experiments were unsuccessful, leading to the abandonment of the project. This was followed by the signing of the GEO (Genetically Engineered Organism) Treaty, which prohibited genetic modifications on humans and severely restricted their development and use on other lifeforms. Thus, HOPE agents are all ordinary human beings, albeit those who have been trained to be among the best in the world. And they need to be, considering how dangerous FEAR has become recently. Among HOPE's ranks are a specialist unit known as the Guardian Angels - an all-female squad trained in various forms of combat and intelligence, often deployed in situations too dangerous and/or difficult for HOPE's regular forces. They will be the subject of the next post in this series.

Note: HOPE received its name from the home planet (orbiting the Glory system) of the Terrans in the Infinite Space trilogy of sci-fi roguelikes. Similarly, FEAR was named as such because it represents the opposite of what HOPE stands for.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 48: 12 X-Girls of Christmas

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 48: 12 X-Girls of Christmas

As a Christmas gift to everyone who has used the X-Girl Creator, here is an artwork of all 12 of the CRASH Chronicles X-Girl characters I have made, all dressed up for a very special Christmas party:

Although Flash Player (which underpins this and the other dress-up games I have played or seen) is coming to the end of its life, I have made enough artworks to be happy to use them for years to come - and the memories will last a lifetime. Besides, there's a chance that the creators of these games will ensure their continued survival by migrating them from Flash to another platform. And last but not least, I would like to wish all the X-Girl and Azalea's Dolls fans and creators of the world a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and may your works be admired and adored for all time.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 47: Illuminating and Ultimate Grey

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 47: Illuminating and Ultimate Grey

In honor of PANTONE selecting two Colors of the Year for 2021 - a bright, saturated yellow called Illuminating, and a neutral grey known, quite fittingly, as Ultimate Gray, I would like to share some CRASH Chronicles artwork using these two colors. First up is an X-Girl scene showing the original four CRASH Agents, whose outfits display both Colors of the Year prominently.

Above, from left to right: A set of outfits for the original four CRASH Agents - Claire Hayes in a swimsuit with a blazer on top, Ellie Watts in a yellow midi dress under a full-length coat, Kayla Brooks in a yellow sports bra and gray leggings with yellow accents, and Alexa Lowe in a specially modified Armored CRASH Suit.

And just because I felt like it, I decided to make more artworks of my first-ever X-Girl character, Ellie Watts, in grey and yellow outfits using various dress-up games from Azalea's Dolls - so here they are. Ellie Watts' cool complexion lent itself well to this particular color scheme - more so than any of the other original four CRASH Chronicles characters.

Above, from top: Ellie Watts in other dress-up games showcasing some grey and yellow outfits - 40s Fashion (grey coat over yellow dress), Casual Style Maker (grey jacket and leggings, yellow crop top, cap and shoes) and Sci Fi Warrior (grey armor, pants and boots, with yellow accents, energy and laser beam).

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 46: Video Game Cosplay Capers

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 46: Video Game Cosplay Capers

As part of my doll-making holiday bonanza, I decided - once again - to imagine the women of CRASH Chronicles (specifically, the first eight characters to be introduced) dressed as popular video game characters. So here they are.

Before I start, I would like to point out that the first two CRASH Chronicles characters I created, Ellie Watts and Claire Hayes (above), lent themselves better to a video game cosplay in X-Girl after finding out that their facial features were particularly well-suited to such a design. However, I have found that other characters from CRASH Chronicles could also be easily adapted for this purpose.

Left to right: Alexa Lowe as Lisa Hamilton from Dead or Alive 5, Kayla Brooks as Cammy White from Street Fighter V, Claire Hayes as Kitana from Mortal Kombat II, Ellie Watts as Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat, Tiffany Ward as Nina Williams from Tekken 2, Jessie Barton as Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Katie Palmer as Tina Armstrong from Dead or Alive 6, and Mara Hart as Sheva Alomar from Resident Evil 5.

And just for good measure, here's another X-Girl artwork I made using the same theme.

Left to right: Alexa Lowe as Jade from Mortal Kombat 9, Kayla Brooks as Rachel from Dead or Alive 6, Claire Hayes as Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII, Ellie Watts as Sarah Bryant from Virtua Fighter 2, Tiffany Ward as Sherry Birkin from Resident Evil 6, Jessie Barton as Michelle Chang from Tekken, Katie Palmer as Blue Mary from King of Fighters, and Mara Hart as Pharah from Overwatch.

Although some elements of certain costumes could not be replicated as accurately as expected due to the limitations of the X-Girl Creator, I am very pleased at how this one turned out. Please note that all trademarks are properties of their respective owners.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 45: Teenage and Adult X-Girls Compared

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 45: Teenage and Adult X-Girls Compared

Having noticed that I am now approaching the 50th post in this series, I figured out that it would be a good idea to compare the current designs of the original four CRASH Chronicles characters - Ellie Watts, Claire Hayes, Kayla Brooks and Alexa Lowe - with their teenage selves. So here they are compared to their adult forms.

Comparison of the original four team members of CRASH Chronicles as adults (left) with the same characters as late teenagers (right).

Whereas the adult versions of the original four characters tend to have more formal attire, make-up and hair styles, the (late) teenage versions generally had a more casual approach to all three instead. This is what makes them distinct from the current designs. However, it is worth noting that the other eight characters (including the recently added Final Four in CRASH Chronicles are not featured here since, unlike the original four, they were not introduced into canon before adulthood - presumably to avoid them from gaining too much experience (and exposure) too soon.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 42: The Final Four

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 42: The Final Four

Having realized that the Goddess Dress Up Game only allows for the creation of no more than six dolls, whereas there's no limit in X-Girl Creator, I hit upon the idea of adding one last quartet of characters to CRASH Chronicles. It stemmed from the fact that I had already included two of these four new characters in an earlier Goddess artwork, as shown below.

The original four characters from CRASH Chronicles joined by two of what will be known as "The Final Four".

So, without further ado, here are their data files. First up is Tina "Taipan" Morris, a new ally for Ellie Watts, and capable of immobilizing a target temporarily and turning them into a sitting duck.

Note: This is the original data sheet for Tina Morris. Since its release, the Range stat shown above is now called the Energy stat, but still serves the same function by indicating how much energy an agent has at their disposal.

The second member of the final four, Vicki "Venom" Cowan, has a tractor beam as a special ability; she can use it to drain or restore a target's vitality, as first observed firsthand by Alexa Lowe during a training exercise (although she can only do either of them for a limited time).

The third member of the Final Four, Julia "Boomer" Cortez, received an offer from Claire Hayes to can create a blast wave around herself, throwing everything (except allies) within range a considerable distance.

Last but not least is Shana "Starburst" Dawes, Kayla Brooks' protégé, and the only one who can launch herself at high speed to a nearby target or destination, causing considerable damage on impact.

Now that a description of each member of the Final Four has been released, I am now ready to show you another Goddess artwork, depicting the remaining two from this last batch alongside the four characters who were originally from STAR Power but have since been transplanted into CRASH Chronicles canon.

This completes the now 12-strong lineup for CRASH Chronicles. In the future, I might want to create depictions of the Final Four in other dress-up games, but it's not an absolute necessity at the moment.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 39: A Special 28th Birthday Present

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 39: A 28th Birthday Present

In celebration of my 28th birthday, I have taken the opportunity to show some new artworks depicting the women of CRASH Chronicles celebrating the occasion. To start us off, here are the original four members dressed up to the nines, on a rooftop at night with their powers on display for all to see:

The four original women of CRASH Chronicles lighting up the sky in honor of my 28th birthday...

Next up are the four newcomers, originally part of the defunct STAR Power initiative, joining in the festivities.

...and the "reinforcements" are getting in on the act as well!

Last but not least, here are two artworks showing all eight of them together, with CRASH Commander Claire Hayes wishing me a very happy birthday in the latter:

And to anyone in the real world viewing this blog... Thank you for all your birthday wishes!

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 38: Reinforcements

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 38: Reinforcements

This is my 200th(!) post on this blog, and to mark the occasion, I have decided to give the four new CRASH recruits from the defunct STAR Power initiative a full-fledged data sheet each. So here they are.

First up is Katie Palmer, a melee specialist whose ability involves slightly sacrificing one offensive stat for a huge but temporary boost to another.

Next in the list of new recruits is Tiffany Ward, a specialist in defensive techniques who can also cloak herself temporarily to avoid detection.

The third new recruit is Jessie Barton, whose abilities are mostly based on ice, and can designate a target to improve her attacks' accuracy.

Last but not least is Mara Hart, a pyrokinetic whose fire-based attacks can deal damage over time to any target.

Above, from top: Data sheets for the four newcomers to CRASH Chronicles - Katie Palmer, Tiffany Ward, Jessie Barton and Mara Hart.

This should give you an idea of what these new X-Girls are capable of - so stay tuned for a more detailed analysis on each of them.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 37: Getting the Band Back Together

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 37: Getting the Band Back Together

Revisiting CRASH Chronicles recently made me consider the idea of integrating the four characters from my other series, STAR Power, into that series' lore. And after some deliberation, I finally went ahead and did it. To accommodate this, I have made a few changes. The red-clad, raven-haired X-Girl/Heroine Fan Art Creator character I had made a few years ago is now called Jessica Barton, and has gained the ability to create something resembling a laser beam (which can temporarily stun targets and render them vulnerable to subsequent attacks) using her fists, while her dark-skinned best friend now has the snappier, simpler name of Mara Hart, and has gained the ability to generate small fires. Tiffany Ward retains her original name and powers (the latter of which involve boosting her defenses, especially by reducing the accuracy of enemy attacks), but the last member of STAR Power is now called Katie Palmer, and has the exact opposite ability to Ward's: a temporary buff to her offensive capabilities.

Combine the women of CRASH Chronicles with their buddies from STAR Power, and you have a virtually unstoppable force on your hands.

The premise of this collaboration is that, after a series of battles, the original four women of CRASH Chronicles are in desperate need of reinforcements - and they find them in the form of the recently disbanded STAR Power initiative, of which Ward, Palmer, Barton and Hart are the only surviving members. All four of them decide to join CRASH Chronicles by volunteering for its enhancement program, thereby explaining how they got their new powers. CRASH promises that they will provide all four newcomers with the expertise needed to team up with any existing CRASH agents, and they do just that. With all eight members now working together, CRASH will be better equipped to handle threats that no other agency will want (or be able) to deal with.

The eight women of the CRASH Alpha Squad again, in their respective teams' training outfits (above) and in fancy color-coded dresses (below). Jessica and Claire are on the White Wolves, Ellie and Katie on the Blue Eagles, Kayla and Tiffany on the Purple Lions, and Alexa and Mara on the Golden Dragons.

To reflect their diverse roles and powers, the CRASH Alpha Squad has been split into four divisions. The Blue Eagles specialize in offense, while the Purple Lions place an emphasis on defense. The White Wolves, meanwhile, focus on speed and precision, while the Golden Dragons prefer a balance between these attributes. Each division carries a total of five members, led by two co-captains, and ever since the CRASH Alpha Squad's expansion, each co-captaincy position has been held by an X-Girl from that team.

Now that the Alpha Squad is ready for battle once again, who knows what dangers they will face? Only time will tell.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 35: Good Dolls in Worlds Gone Bad

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 35: Good Dolls in Worlds Gone Bad

In light of all the doom and gloom that's blighted the world over the past few months, I figured that I would dedicate this post mostly to artworks showing multiple dolls instead of one (or in the case of games that only allow you to make one per artwork, several from that particular game), with an overarching theme of cooperation and resilience in the face of a major threat. So here they are, in no particular order.

X-Girl: In this scene, my first four original X-Girl characters from CRASH Chronicles (Ellie, Claire, Kayla and Alexa) are joined by a quartet of newcomers in a dense, dark forest. All of them are shown having banded together to defeat whatever evil lurks behind the trees, and are shown in their armored CRASH Suits, with their weapons drawn, and their special powers ready for use.

A squad of X-Girls in a forest, about to take on a challenging mission some time in the near future. What threats are they going to face this time? And how will they be dealt with?

As a prequel to this, I made another artwork with these same dolls earlier, but in their training outfits, with the premise that they would undertake some basic training exercises to determine whether or not they are actually eligible for duty. Given that all eight were also present in the picture above, it's obvious that they all passed with flying colors.

The same eight dolls as above, but in their training outfits and about to do some basic training exercises to determine whether any of them are ready for the dangerous job of being a CRASH Agent.

Goddess Dress Up Game: The next artwork depicts six goddesses, each with a unique set of special powers, gathered at a hillside to discuss their plan for dealing with any potential threats to their realm. Each goddess carries a long sword, color-coded to match their outfit and adorned with a precious crystal on its hilt.

A sextet of goddesses on a hillside, armed with crystal-encrusted long swords, discussing how best to deal with any threats to their world.

And just for good measure, I decided to depict them clad in armor, ready for battle.

The same six goddesses as in the previous picture, but fully clad in armor, ready for battle.

Fairytale Scene Maker: If the scene I made in X-Girl had been set in the Fairytale Scene Maker, and thrown back several centuries, this is one suggestion as to how it could look like. The main difference here is that firearms have not been invented in this setting, and each heroine carries a long sword instead. Also, the eight heroines have been sorted into four teams of two, with the first, second, third and fourth teams having primarily red, blue, purple and yellow outfits respectively.

Four teams of two heroines each gathered in a forest, about to embark on an adventure the likes of which they may not return from... unless they defeat all of their foes.

Tudors Scene Maker: If the eight women of CRASH Chronicles were warped back in time several centuries, they might look like this:

It is rare to see eight women of royal blood gathered together all at once, but here they are, discussing their plans for the future.

In this scene, all eight women are pictured in the throne room of a vast castle, explaining their plans in a time of crisis, where the fate of their world hinges mainly on their actions, and the consequences of failure will be catastrophic.

Heroine Fan Art Creator: I decided to go with something approximating a Greco-Roman mythological theme for this one. Obviously, due to limitations in the designer, I had to take a few liberties with the designs for each doll.

Above, from top: Updated versions of Greco-Roman-inspired designs for my original four dolls made in the Heroine Fan Art Creator, with new color schemes.

Most notably, I revised their color schemes to include an accent color, while gold now served as the foreground colors for each one. I couldn't give each of them a sword either, since no such item is present in this game. Even so, I am pleased with how well this one turned out.

And as an addendum to this segment, I gave each of my original four characters from CRASH Chronicles the same treatment.

Another set of Heroine Fan Art Creator cards, but this time depicting the four women introduced in CRASH Chronicles.

Sci Fi Warrior: I extrapolated the designs of all four original CRASH Agents from CRASH Chronicles into the Sci Fi Warrior dress up game, and ended up with the following artworks shown below.

Above, from top: The four original CRASH Agents (Ellie Watts, Kayla Brooks, Claire Hayes and Alexa Low) from CRASH Chronicles extrapolated into the Sci Fi Warrior Dress Up Game.

Here, Ellie is armed with a large laser rifle, Kayla carries a pair of smaller blasters, Claire wields a long sword (most likely a katana) and Alexa is shown activating her decloaking field.

I could go on and post many more possibilities with this theme, but this post would be much longer if I did.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 32: Happy Holidays!

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 32: Happy Holidays!

Christmas Day has finally arrived, and to celebrate, I would like to send my followers a few special gifts - starting with an artwork I made depicting Tiffany Ward, my first ever Heroine Fan Art Creator character, in festive dress. Here it is:

Tiffany Ward wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Next is a pair of artworks I made in the X-Girl Creator depicting the women of CRASH Chronicles- including the newcomers - all glammed up at a holiday season party.

The women of CRASH Chronicles - including the newcomers - all wishing you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2020.

Last but not least, here's one last gift from me to my followers: a new artwork depicting the four original characters from CRASH Chronicles in the Goddess Dress Up Game, ready for battle with their swords drawn.

If the four original characters from CRASH Chronicles were warped into ancient Greek times and became mythological warriors, this is one suggestion as to which they might look like.

That concludes my holiday season round-up. I would like to take this moment to wish all you doll-makers out there a very Merry Christmas... And a Happy New Year for 2020!

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 29: CRASH Chronicles Part 4 - Striker and Support Classes

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 29: CRASH Chronicles Part 4 - Striker and Support Classes

Within the relaunched CRASH Chronicles storyline, agents are classified according to how their abilities perform. In this post I will take a look at two of these classes: Striker and Support. These were the first two classes I created for CRASH Chronicles, but they were not the last. There will also be other classes as well, and those will eventually be described in later posts.

Above: CRASH Agents Ellie Watts (left) and Claire Hayes (right) in their training outfits. The former is a Striker, whose attacks tend to have a long range; the latter is a Support, whose abilities are focused on assisting teammates.

We'll start with the Striker class, which is geared mainly towards long-range combat. These agents are most commonly employed in a sniping role, keeping a watchful eye on their targets before unleashing their attacks on them. Strikers are generally fast-moving and highly agile, which decreases their likelihood of detection. Their only major weakness is their sub-par durability, although this can be negated if the Striker stays on the move and makes good use of cover. Ellie Watts is a classic example: she can launch powerful bursts of lightning across long distances and is light on her feet, but can easily be taken out with a few hard hits.

Support class Agents, on the other hand, have abilities that benefit the team they're on by assisting their teammates or hindering their enemies. Claire Hayes, for example, is capable of establishing a psionic link with other people within a certain range, allowing her to predict their actions, thoughts and movements more easily. In combat, it improves the accuracy of her allies' attacks; however, away from battle, it makes it easier for her to negotiate a peaceful resolution if there is a potential conflict - a useful trait given that CRASH considers direct combat to be a measure of last resort.

Thus ends my discussion of the first two character classes featured in CRASH Chronicles. Stay tuned for more class descriptions in future posts.

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 28: CRASH Chronicles Redux Part 3 - New Blood

Doll Maker's Diary, Part 28: CRASH Chronicles Redux Part 3 - New Blood

So far, my reboot of CRASH Chronicles has been limited to a visual makeover for all four main characters and updated info screens for each of them. Admittedly, however, it has made them look and feel much better than they used to, and that can only be a good thing.

Above, from top: The original four characters of CRASH Chronicles, dressed up for a night on the town, a training session at the gym, and for my upcoming story arc involving a tournament contested by superhumans.

Now, however, I feel like the time is right to introduce another set of characters, all of which would make for a decent supporting cast. Here is a preview of all four of these newcomers alongside the existing characters.

The original four CRASH Squad members alongside the newcomers in their training outfits (above) and in full battle armor (below).

All of the newcomers will be fleshed out further in future posts, with each one receiving its own info screen just like the original cast, so watch this space.
