Doll Maker's Diary, Part 18: Halloween Special
Halloween is when people throw parties, go trick-or-treating and put on all sorts of fancy costumes to scare (or amaze) their friends. With this in mind, I would like to show you an artwork I made on the X-Girl Creator where the original four members of Alpha Squad dress up as characters from Warner Bros.' best-selling video game franchise, Mortal Kombat. So here they are set against a backdrop which reminds me of the Living Forest of Outworld, a location introduced in the second game.
Above, from left: Claire Hayes, Ellie Watts, Kayla Brooks and Alexa Lowe as Princess Kitana, Cassie Cage, Sonya Blade and Jade respectively.
When I made the costumes for Claire and Alexa (referencing Kitana and Jade's outfits from Mortal Kombat II), I had to take a few liberties. Notably, Kitana's steel fan was absent from the X-Girl Creator's list of items, so I replaced it with a katana - although Alexa retains Jade's staff (an item not introduced until Mortal Kombat 3), albeit colored green. More significantly, I depicted them as unmasked, whereas in MKII, Kitana only took off her mask during one of her finishers (and Jade never took hers off at all, by virtue of only appearing in that game as a non-playable character). In addition, Kayla's costume is based on Sonya Blade's outfit from her debut appearance in the very first game, but with her hair done up in a ponytail, which Sonya didn't have until the third game; moreover, her earrings are bright green instead of red. Finally, Ellie's costume is based primarily on Cassie Cage's Endurance outfit from Mortal Kombat X, the latest game in the series.
